Treason.

[Mukasey is] wrong on torture—dead wrong.

—Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), shortly before voting to confirm Mukasey as our 81st Attorney General

You know, if somebody’s wrong—dead wrong—on torture, then politesse demands maybe you think a good long minute before going ahead and pissing all over them when they’re on fire. What you don’t do is vote them in as Attorney goddamn General.

Maybe it’s just me.

No man
No madness
(Though their sad power may prevail)
Can possess
Conquer
My country’s heart—
They rise to fail.

She is eternal
Long before nations’ lines were drawn
When no flags flew
When no armies stood
My land was born

And you ask me
Why I love her
Through wars, death and despair
She is the constant
We who don’t care
And you wonder
Will I leave her—
But how?
I cross over borders
But I’m still there now

How can I leave her?
Where would I start?
Let man’s petty nations tear themselves apart.
My land’s only borders lie around my heart.

The more brazen the Repubs get, the more craven the Dems get. It’s astonishing. My belief has been restored, that the two parties are more or less one-and-the-same.

Just to play devil’s advocate, maybe a 14 months left of the BushAdmin doesn’t make a confirmation fight worth doing as all energies are now on retaking the White House. There are plenty of DC folks who feel no real change can occur until the current admin is out.

Not that it excuses playing the fool regarding Iran, warrant-less wire taps, etc. But I could see in the case of Mukasey, he’s better than the previous two AGs and he’ll be out in a year anyway. What could possibly go wrong? (A question I ask with utter facetiousness.)

I say fuck the devil you just rode in on, Kevin. We just (further) entrenched torture as something-Americans-do, all to avoid a confirmation fight against Mr Lower Than Nixon. —How on earth is granting the Bush administration a better AG than for the last 14 months of its godawful run worth standing up and voting to confirm someone who’s wrong on torture?

Yu haff relatives in ze old country, ya? has become Y’all have folks back east, dontcha? Jesus weeping Christ.
