Comic-page illustrator?

An obituary of the innovative comic-page illustrator Will Eisner yesterday included an imprecise comparison in some copies between his character the Spirit and others, including Batman. Unlike Superman and some other heroes of the comics, Batman relied on intelligence and skill, not supernatural powers.

(Also, they forgot “vast personal fortune.”)

That vast personal fortune always gets me. There's always that implication that Justice League bases (not to mention the Batcave and his vehicles and gadgets) are built using his money, which leads me to wonder just how many of those things Bill Gates must have.

Of course, mysterious availability of resources are huge part of the suspension of disbelief.

I thought the JLA relied on Oliver Queen's vast personal fortune.

And maybe someone can tell me: Does Queen or Wayne pay stipends to the other superheroes so they can spend so much time away from their day jobs fighting off attacks from outer space? Clark Kent's a journalist, for pete's sake! What's he make a week? And Kyle Rayner? A free lance graphic artist?

I think some people have to start talking Union.

Oh, I didn't know about Queen's fortune. Comics cred... fading... I'm going to have to finish GL/GA, although I suspect that doesn't go into his origins.

At least Kyle's freelance. And I'm guessing Clark always scoops everyone on the Planet covering the Threats to Earth beat. Interviews with Darkseid: Up Close and Personal, that sort of thing.

It's sort of like how vampires can afford all those leather pants and velvet-lined limousines and suchlike. "Oh, um, Lestat has this bank account. In France. Seriously, though."

Oliver Queen, supporting the League? I thought he went bust. Bruce Wayne? What the heck about Maxwell Lord, huh?

    How quickly they forget...

    Illustrator? Doodler! Scribbler!

    Glen,

My comics cred has faded to non-existance. All I know now is what my kids tell me, and I'm not sure how much they can be trusted to give me the straight poop. They like to make adaptations.

But they assure me Queen's the JLA moneyman. Which explains a lot, like why those real superheroes let Green Arrow hang around with them. It's like that New York State Lottery ad where the manager of a baseball team is being asked about his team's chances considering the guy they've got playing third base can't field and can't hit. Turns out the guy's bought the team with his Lotto winnings.

    Green Arrow owns the team.
