On a clear day you can see forever

You can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

—Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Funny thing about waves: give ’em a little time, they come rolling in again.

    San Francisco.

I have mixed feelings about the folks who obviously were preparing their lavish costumes for weeks in advance, but they're certainly fun to look at.

Antartica shows up, but Portland? Were we sleeping? I recall that weekend there was a small gathering, but nothing well publicized. (A schedule conflict prevented me from going, unfortunately.)

Anyone who quotes HST is ok by me.

Kevin: There was an action in Portland, as well as ones in Salem, Corvallis, and Eugene, on Feb. 15, but much smaller than the Seattle/SF ones.

The F15 one in Portland wasn't well-publicized, and Amy, Bean, and I ended up going to Salem, where Rep. Peter DeFazio spoke.

The Portland F15 was more anarchic (in terms of planning and people attending), ending up in civil disobedience (people sitting down in the middle of Broadway). Police terrorism ensued, including use of pain holds by some cops and pepper-spraying by Lt. Martin Rowley, the goon who ordered the spraying of the Bush protesters at the August 22 rally.

    Thanks, Aaron.

vachon: Even when I'm quoting Thompson at his sappiest? (I love that quote. Then, I'm a big sappy sentimentalist.)

On Feb 15, there was also a gathering of pagans at 20th and Belmont to do an anti-war ritual. I get most of my local anti-war news from various Portland pagan lists and none of them had heard of the small downtown gathering - I didn't hear about it until Sunday. Btw, I'm not quite as hopeful about the results of all of this public action (Mao's quote about power comes to mind) but I love the HST quote.
